Review of HP/Compaq Presario PCs printers in India ISPs in India Computers in India Contact us Home
I had purchased my first PC in 1997 and purchased 4 assembled PCs since then. I have found it very difficult to locate a reliable supplier of assembled PCs in Mumbai. As soon as the computer dealers get their cheque , they conveniently forget that they have sold a PC to you. They refuse to give any after sales service and their computers usually start having problems after 6-8 months. That is when I decided to buy a branded PC - a Compaq Presario 3353AP in 2002. The main reason why I prefer to purchase Compaq PCs is the toll free customer support no. - currently 1 800 114 772. If there is any problem, you can call they up from the comfort of your home and can follow up at no cost. They also have a centralized database where serial numbers of the machines are stored, so they can track the problems faced by you.
HP/Compaq Presario PCs are advertised extensively in newspapers and TV in India. HP PCs are usually more expensive than Compaq Presario machines, but since most computers become outdated in 1-2 years, it is advisable to buy 2 low end machines rather than 1 expensive HP computer for 3 years. The price also varies from dealer to dealer. You can get a good discount by negotiating hard and pay only after delivery of your machine, since the machines are often out of stock with the main distributor in the city.
I usually buy a new PC after 1.5 year work since the hard disk becomes full and Compaq provides free after sales service for 1 year. The first 2 Compaq machines I purchased 3353AP and S6020L had an AMD Athlon CPU and worked OK . Since Intel CPUs are more popular in India, I decided to purchase the SG 1008IL Compaq Presario PC to check the performance. It is worst Compaq PC I have used till date. Though the Intel Pentium CPU runs at 2.4 GHz it is far slower than the PC with a 1.67 GHz AMD Athlon CPU. This PC also has some major design flaws - all USB ports are on the back side, the scroll mouse makes a squeaking sound like real living mouse (they have already replaced it twice in 6 months) . One would have thought that a large technology company like Hewlett Packard would have better engineers who could design a US$2 mouse properly. Update: They have replaced the mouse again, but within 2 days, it is making a squeaking sound.
After sales service for Compaq Presario PCs is provided by Redington in Mumbai. Usually their engineers are fairly efficient but some times they can create problems. Once there was a problem with the colour palette for the Compaq 5500 monitor. The service engineer they sent had a part time business of repairing monitors. He started repairing my monitor by switching the power supply on and desoldering some connections . When I protested and told him that soldering with power supply on would damage the monitor, he dismissed my complaints. After one hour, the floor was covered with a silver layer of solder and the monitor which was working partially was completely dead. He said he would replace the damaged part in 1-2 days. After 2-3 days, when I did not hear from him, and starting calling up the HP/Compaq toll free number 3-4 times a day. Finally after a week, a Redington sent an engineer who repaired the PC. If the after sales service was provided by a local PC vendor, I doubt whether I could have got this kind of support.
